How to Install the Latest PS5 Update

Need to update your PS5 firmware? Here’s the fastest way to install the latest system software, plus the USB and Safe Mode method if your console gets stuck.

Keeping your PS5 firmware updated is one of the easiest ways to avoid bugs, improve stability, and make sure your console supports the latest games, features, and controller updates. Sony’s official support pages say the simplest method is to update directly through the internet, but there is also a manual USB option if your console will not update normally or you need Safe Mode.

For most players, this is a quick routine task. But if your PS5 is acting strange, stuck on an update, or not booting correctly, knowing the Safe Mode and USB steps can save a lot of time

The Fastest Way to Update Your PS5

If your console is working normally, the fastest method is the built-in online update. Sony says you should go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If a newer version is available, your PS5 will show Update Available, and you can select Update System Software to begin.

Step by Step

  • Go to Settings on your PS5.

  • Open System.

  • Select System Software.

  • Choose System Software Update and Settings.

  • If you see Update Available, choose Update System Software.

That is the easiest route, and it is the one most PS5 owners should use first.

How to Update PS5 Firmware with a USB Drive

  • Turn off your PS5.

  • Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.

  • Create a folder called PS5 on the USB drive.

  • Inside that folder, create another folder called UPDATE.

  • Download the official update file from PlayStation’s support page.

  • Save the file as PS5UPDATE.PUP inside the UPDATE folder.

When Safe Mode Becomes Necessary

If your PS5 is not updating the normal way, Sony says you can start the console in Safe Mode and choose Update System Software from there. To enter Safe Mode, turn off the console completely, then press and hold the power button and release it after the second beep. After that, you can choose either a direct download update or Update from USB Storage Device

Safe Mode is not just for firmware. Sony lists it as a recovery menu with options like restarting the console, changing video output, repairing console storage, and updating system software. For firmware problems, the key option is Update System Software, especially if your PS5 is stuck or not starting correctly.

Common Mistakes That Break the Update

The most common manual-update mistake is getting the folder names or filename wrong. Sony explicitly says that if the PS5 does not recognize the update file, you should check whether the folder names and file name are correct and typed in uppercase letters. That means PS5, UPDATE, and PS5UPDATE.PUP need to be written exactly as shown.

  • Wrong USB format. Sony says use FAT32 or exFAT.

  • Wrong folder structure. It must be PS5/UPDATE.

  • Wrong file name. It must be PS5UPDATE.PUP.

  • Using the wrong file type. Sony separates update files from reinstallation files.

Final Thoughts

Updating your PS5 firmware is usually simple: go through Settings, let the console check for the newest version, and install it normally. But if the system is stuck or not booting properly, the official USB and Safe Mode methods give you a reliable backup route. The main thing is to follow Sony’s instructions exactly, especially when it comes to the USB format, folder structure, and filename.

A firmware update is a small task, but it matters. It keeps your PS5 stable, ready for new features, and properly synced with the latest system and controller software. Sony also notes that controller software updates can be managed through Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) if you want to check those manually too.
